about

"Since We Broke Up," is a song my dad, Doug Midgley, wrote. I heard it for the first time on an old cassette when I was just a teen and was devastated when the player ate the tape before it finished playing the song. Luckily, I was able to find a place that could somehow digitize the content despite the fact that I handed them a wadded up bundle of cassette string.
I was so relieved when I played this song in it's entirety for the first time on a CD player.
Years and years later -maybe 12 years- I received a random text from Digital Droo asking how I felt about Force M.D.'s "Tender Love." I told him I thought it would be a blast to work on a song with that kind of throwback vibe and sent him an MP3 of my dad's "Since We Broke Up," thinking it might be fitting. I was pleasantly surprised when, mere hours later, Droo sent me an instrumental marriage of the two songs.
Together, Digital Droo and I shattered our personal songwriting records. We had the entire song written, arranged, performed, mixed and mastered in a matter of weeks. It is amazing to think that a song that must be 30+ years in the making only took us a couple of weeks to conceive of and complete - as though it was written in the stars.

lyrics

Since We Broke Up
By Doug Midgley with contributions by Allison

After all the times
You made me cry
I can’t forget
The joy when we first met
Although I’d try
To memorize your face
I never thought
That you would leave someday

Now every time I see a pretty face
I seem to put you right there in her place

Remember all the nights
We spent alone
And the plans we shared
About a family and a home
I can’t imagine why
You’d leave me here
To wonder if
I somehow did you wrong

Now every time I see a pretty face
I seem to put you right there in her place

Since we broke up
I see you in every face you
Always show up
Constant reminders echo your name
Love’s just not enough
Since we broke up

I must have let you down
For you to hurt me
The way you did
To pretend nothing was wrong
Left me with no chance
To save romance
Now there’s no hope
‘Cause you’re already gone

Every time I see a pretty face
I seem to put you right there in her place

You don’t feel the pain
Of seeing the love you’ve lost
In ubiquitous
Mementos of what it cost
Yeah I’m moving on
But everywhere I go
I’m confronted by the fate I’ll never know

‘Cause every time I see a pretty face
I seem to put you right in her place

Since we broke up
I see you in every face you
Always show up
Constant reminders echo your name
Love’s just not enough
Since we broke up

No matter where I choose to be
I’m haunted by your memory
And any peace I try to find
Brings you to mind
I never wanted to erase
The happiness that’s been re-
Placed by emptiness
Since the day you left

Since we broke up
I see you in every face you
Always show up
Constant reminders echo your name
Love’s just not enough
Since we broke up

Since we broke up
