about

This song got its start when Doug Midgley, my dad, wrote a song he called 1979. I heard the song for the first time years after he had passed away and felt so moved by lyrics and topical relevance that I decided to write a sort of follow-up. I called it 2020. What surprised me most as I wrote, was just how many of the concerns my dad expressed about the state of the world in 1979 still remain major pain points today. His words are so true today that I went so far as to incorporate a full verse from his song into mine!

lyrics

2020
By: Allison Gosalvez (2107) and Doug Midgley (1979)

What would a dollar be worth
If there’s no one left to pay and
What would you want to fix first
If the future happened today

When I was a child
I would sit and wonder where
The gas would go when Dad filled up
I didn’t know it turned to air
Seems burning fuel’s like feeding birds
Turns to waste then goes somewhere
Shit hits the ground to decompose
Exhaust lingers in our air
And we breathe it in our lungs so deep
Then laugh like it’s not there
We’re trading our lives for mobility
When we can’t afford the fare

When I’m out on hikes
I look out across the skyline
I take in the view and I think to myself
If not now then when is the time
By the inch our planet’s growing
By the footprint she rapidly dies
This vantage point seems to show that we
Need to reprioritize
Tiny people, tiny changes
Perspective will blow your mind
Wouldn’t you find it’d be strange if
Fate was ours to decide

It’s time to perceive the view ahead
It’s time to include the right and left
Let’s just try
Empathy’s the lens we need
Or hindsight awaits
In 2020

What would a dollar be worth
If there’s no one left to pay and
What would you want to fix first
If the future happened today
There’s hope in making changes
Even small ones that seem basic
Otherwise it’s the afterlife
That will serve as nature’s Lasik

When I feel my best
I’m remembering to breath
With gratitude and happiness
For a future I hope will be
Coming from a place of love
Puts healing within reach
A problem’s the portal to waking up
A symptom’s the means to teach
Look, there’s acid in our oceans
And weather that’s so extreme
We’ve blown past the point of just hope-in-
Action’s what we need

It’s time to perceive the view ahead
It’s time to include the right and left
Let’s just try
Empathy’s the lens we need
Or hindsight awaits
In 2020
In 2020 yeah
In 2020
In 2020 yeah

Ain’t hindsight a bitch
Let’s not wait for 2020
Come on, people!
